ADVANCED ARTS INSTITUTE
Juneau, Alaska • JULY 26 – AUGUST 7, 2008 •
University of Alaska Southeast 3 graded credits (ED593) • 10-day
residency + 2 audios, readings and a completed project •
Limit: 20 (K-12) Educators Prerequisite: attended
a Basic or Visual Arts Institute or approval by teacher leaders
Designed to deepen arts knowledge, skills and personal interests
of educators who have already attended a Basic Arts Institute. Participants
will:
- Continue personal education in art forms that interest and inspire
them, beyond what was learned during the Basic Arts Institute including
visual arts, music, rhythm & drumming
- Learn more about storytelling
- Share an integrated arts unit and develop arts assessments
- Examine research on arts education, brain research & arts advocacy
- Have interactions with Alaska Native Elders and Artists
- Enjoy
open studios and art workshops
Advanced Arts Institute begins Saturday, July
26 & ends Thursday, August 7 at 2 p.m.
The weekend of August 2 and 3 is open to enjoy beautiful Southeast Alaska.

Debbie Piper, Visual Arts: Is a veteran classroom
and visual arts teacher at McNeil Canyon Elementary School in Homer.
Her leadership in the K-6 school has nurtured a culture that embraces
all of the arts. She teaches a school wide, discipline-based art program
and uses art as a vehicle to promote literacy. She has a broad background
in the arts, a Master of Arts in Teaching and an elementary art endorsement.

Linda
Mason, Music: Linda teaches music at Hunter Elementary
in Fairbanks. Her enthusiasm and creativity show in the many
ways she makes music more fun for students and allows them to develop
a genuine love for the art. Linda will work with institute participants
to provide valuable lessons and experience for teachers in exploring
music instruction and integrating it in their classrooms. She
has a Bachelor and Master of Music and has specialized training in

Sue Anne Foster, Visual Arts: As a sculptor, instructor,
and an Artist-in-the-Schools, Sue Anne has broad arts experience. Whether
in winning awards for her sculpture, doing pioneering work with arts
for the handicapped or advocating for arts in the schools, she is committed. Currently
she is a part-time instructor at California State University in
Sacramento preparing future teachers to integrate art into their classrooms. Sue
Anne has a M.A. in Art from California State University and a Ph.D. in
Education from the University of Santa Barbara. Her contact is mandala3@surewest.net
Institute Support Staff
Suzie Gaffney: Coordinator for the Institute. Lives
in Juneau and has taught school for over thirty years in Texas, Oregon,
Alaska, Italy, and Japan. Her experience includes teaching all grade
levels, interaction with students in a variety of after-school programs,
participating in overseas exchanges, designing curriculum, and working
with youth and adults on community engagement and asset building. She
has an M.A. in Dance and the Related Arts from Texas Woman’s University. Contact

Annie Calkins: Institute Evaluator. Lives in Juneau
and has been retired from the Juneau School District for seven years.
She was the Dept. of Education Language arts specialist for many years
and has worked extensively with the Breadloaf School of English and the
Alaska State Writing Consortium. She is a founding member of the
Alaska Arts Education Consortium and provides invaluable assistance with
grants, evaluation and future goal setting for the organization. Contact
