2001 – 2002 School Year
June 8 – 9, 2001 Alaska
Arts Ed Summit, hosted by ASCA (Challenge
America grant funding) in Soldotna
Purpose: “to develop a statewide strategy to promote the arts
as an essential part of
basic education in Alaska and to determine the
role ASCA should play in
this overall strategy.”
Participants: 25
Outcomes: ASCA should: (1) make small grants ($5,000) to demonstration
sites to document “best practices” and exemplary programs; (2)
develop talent bank and cadre of workshops, including the Alliance’s
Kenai Institute; (3) develop a clearinghouse for information.
June 29 Audio-conference
follow-up, hosted by ASCA
Purpose: to finalize recommendations from Summit in terms of specific
projects.
Participants: Lance Petersen, Anni Stokes, Marilyn Davidson, Connie

Outcomes: Decision to focus on Summit recommendation #2 and collect
data re: pre-service teacher training, inservice/professional development activities
in districts, DOE teacher certification requirements, and consider workshop
development models, such as Kennedy Center model. Discuss idea of workshop/institute/consortia
models in the future.
November 29 – 30 Arts
Ed Consortium Planning Meeting #1, hosted by
ASCA, Anchorage
Purpose: to review professional development models (Writing
Consortium, Quality Schools Institute, Partners in Education, Summer Acadmies)
in terms of statewide sustainability and impact.
Participants: Marilyn Davidson, Theresa John, Connie Lutz,
Barb Short, Annie Calkins

Outcomes: (1)Drafted definition/outline for three week summer institute;
(2) identified 3 goals for an Action Plan – Teacher Training, Partnerships,
Communications/Advocacy;(3) drafted goals for statewide arts ed initiative
in terms of students, teachers, the state in general.
January 25, 2002 Arts
Ed Consortium Planning Meeting #2, hosted by ASCA, Anchorage
Purpose: to produce specific, written goals for the emerging
arts ed consortium that can be incorporated into National Endowment for
the Arts reporting, revise the institute model draft, and review the draft
of survey designed to go to all districts.
Participants: Annie Calkins (facilitator), Dale Cope, Marilyn

Outcomes: Produced final wording for 3 goals and accompanying 24 month
action Plan, assigned participants districts to collect data from, revised
draft outline for summer institute and suggested structure and nominated individuals
for interim board of consortium.

Purpose: To bring together Alaskan artists to discuss what artists
can do to make a positive difference in the lives of youth and encourage
community engagement, using the Developmental Assets Framework.
Participants: 15 arts organizations

Center Artists as Educators
Workshop, Anchorage
Purpose: To train 15 Alaskan artists who are involved with residencies
to develop a workshop for classroom teachers.
Participants: Alaskan artists selected by AIS Director and others.
Outcome: Increased knowledge by artists about responsibilities
of teachers in relation to academic standards and testing. Workshops
developed, to be delivered in home communities.
April 29 – May 1 TOPS
Training: Images that Connect, hosted by AASB,
Anchorage
Participants: 30 – 5 arts organizations and teams from 6 rural
school districts.
July 24 – August 5, 2005 2nd
Basic Institute, hosted by AAEC, Juneau
Participants: 27 teachers statewide

Arts Ed Summit, “Taking Charge” hosted by ASCA,
Anchorage
Purpose: To deepen the presence and impact of arts education and
the arts in education in Alaskan Schools by engaging leaders in action planning.
Participants: 19 representatives of arts ed organizations, school districts,
U.A. State School Board and Commissioner of Education.
Outcome: Drafted outline of a 3-5 year Action Plan with five priorities:
(1) Actively promote a high school graduation requirement in the Arts/Cultural
Arts, (2) Produce performance standards (and GLEs) in the Arts, (3) Initiate
a Principals’ Initiative, (4) Create a Curriculum Clearinghouse and a
Talent Bank of Teaching Artists, Mentors, Curriculum/Arts Specialists, Coaches,
and (5) Advocate for an Arts Ed Specialist in the Department of Education and
Early Development, in partnership with ASCA. Other goals were also drafted.
May 9 – 10 TOPS
Training: hosted by AASB, Anchorage
Participants: 19 artists, organizational representatives, educators
June 9 Alaska
Art Training: hosted by Anchorage Museum of History
and Art, Anchorage
Purpose: To introduce teachers to the AK Art online curriculum and related
resources.
Participants: 17 teachers. Each received a CD of web-based lessons,
posters of art images, and a series of publications produced by the Anchorage
Museum.
July 16 – 28 3rd
Basic Institute: hosted by AAEC, Juneau
Participants: 28 teachers statewide
July 20 Alaska
Art Training: presented during Basic Arts Institute,
Juneau
Purpose: To introduce teachers to the AK Art online curriculum and related
resources.
Participants: 39 teachers (30 rural, 9 urban).
July 30 - August 12 First
Visual Arts Institute: hosted by Fairbanks North Star
School District and AAEC, Fairbanks
Purpose: Teachers will understand how the visual arts are part of a
balanced school program that contributes to overall student achievement, including
strategies for teaching the visual arts with Fairbanks North Star Borough School
District ARTiculate Art Kits.
Participants: 24 teachers
August 1 Alaska
Art Training: presented during Visual Arts Institute,
Fairbanks
Purpose: To introduce institute participants to the AK Art online curriculum
and related resources.
Participants: 25 teachers (11 rural, 14 urban)
2006-2007 School Year
September 1 Alaska
Art Training: presented during In-service Day, Anchorage
Purpose: To introduce Anchorage Visual Arts teachers to the AK
Art online curriculum and related resources.
Participants: 35 K-12 Anchorage teachers

February Alliance
of Arts Education Network Meeting, Washington DC.
Purpose: To work collectively with other members of the Alliance
network, advocating for more arts education in American schools and solidify
advocacy plans for the next year. To connect with other state Alliances
in order to garner new ideas and resource possibilities.
