Lasting Impact
In 2003 the Lower Kuskokwim School District, in partnership with the
AAEC, was awarded a PDAE grant that changed the face of arts education
in Alaska. By the end of the grant period 106 teachers from 14 districts
had participated in an intensive, residential two-week Basic Arts Institute,
far exceeding the original goal. In follow-up evaluations teachers
reported that at least 5,803 Alaskan students
are now receiving more arts education, integrated routinely into their
school experiences as a result of their participation in Basic Institutes.
